Verified Sender ID: the new baseline for customer trust

Image for Verified Sender ID: the new baseline for customer trust

As of 1 July, unverified business messages are now grouped under a single “Unverified” thread on supported devices. Here’s what verification protects, why it matters, and how to catch up if you’re not there yet.

Consumers have learned to be cautious about text messages, and for good reason. Scam texts have become increasingly sophisticated, and that caution doesn’t disappear just because your message happens to be genuine.

Trust starts before a customer reads your message

A verified Sender ID helps them recognise your business instantly and engage with confidence.

Messages from businesses that haven’t registered their Sender ID now display as “Unverified” in a single catch-all thread on supported devices, alongside every other unverified sender. Verified businesses continue to display their brand name at the top of every message, helping customers instantly recognise who they’re hearing from.

Here’s why that distinction matters.

Verification is a trust signal your customers already look for

When customers see your verified business name on a message, they immediately know who it’s from and can feel more confident engaging with it. In a landscape where scams are becoming harder to spot, that instant recognition is more than a compliance requirement—it’s a competitive advantage.

Verification helps protect the trust you’ve spent years building, supports stronger engagement, and gives customers confidence that your messages are genuine.

Your customers already know to look for verified senders. Make sure they see you.

Registration protects your customers and your brand

The Sender ID Register was introduced to help protect Australian consumers from impersonation scams.

By registering your Sender ID, you gain two important layers of protection. Your customers are better protected from scammers attempting to impersonate your business, and your brand is significantly harder for bad actors to misuse.

Registration isn’t just about meeting a requirement—it’s about protecting your reputation and reinforcing customer trust every time you send a message.

Scammers can’t hide behind your brand when your Sender ID is verified.

Verified stands out. Unverified blends in

From 1 July, businesses that haven’t registered their Sender ID are grouped into the same “Unverified” thread on supported devices, alongside every other unverified sender.

Verified businesses continue to display their brand name prominently on every SMS they send, making it easier for customers to recognise and trust legitimate communications.

It’s a visible difference that can influence whether your messages are opened, trusted and acted upon.

One “Unverified” sender, three different brand names, the same scam template — a pattern that registered SMS sender IDs are designed to disrupt.

Verification is now the new baseline

For businesses sending operational, transactional or marketing SMS, a verified Sender ID is no longer a nice-to-have—it’s the standard customers increasingly expect.

That matters even more in industries where trust is critical. Financial services, healthcare, retail, logistics and government organisations all rely on customers reading and acting on important messages quickly. Verification helps remove doubt and creates a more consistent customer experience.

Your competitors are getting verified. Your customers will expect you to do the same.

It’s not too late to get verified

The 1 July milestone wasn’t the end of registration—it simply marked the beginning of the new customer experience.

If you haven’t registered yet, you can still complete the process and restore your verified Sender ID once your application has been approved. See more in our FAQ article here.

Getting started is straightforward:

  • Confirm your business’s Australian Business Register (ABR) contact details.
  • Gather the Sender IDs your business currently uses.
  • Submit your application through the Sender ID Register.
  • Once approved, your verified Sender ID will be restored.

You can still get verified. The sooner you register, the sooner your customers will see your brand instead of “Unverified”.

The bottom line

Verification is no longer something happening behind the scenes—it’s visible to your customers every time you send an SMS.

A verified Sender ID helps customers recognise your business instantly, protects your brand from impersonation, and gives people greater confidence to engage with your messages. As verification becomes the new standard, businesses that haven’t registered risk blending into an “Unverified” thread alongside unknown senders.
