FAQ Frequently Asked Questions

Sinch offers a wide range of number types depending on the country: local, national, mobile, toll-free, shared-cost, short codes, alphanumeric sender IDs, and RCS sender options. Availability varies by region, and the coverage table shows exactly which types are supported in each market.

Sinch provides a detailed, country-by-country coverage chart where you can instantly check availability for each number type. This includes whether a country supports local numbers, mobile numbers, short codes, toll-free, or messaging-only formats like alphanumeric or RCS.

Not all number types support the same capabilities. Some numbers allow full two-way calling and messaging, while others (like alphanumeric sender IDs or RCS) are messaging-only. The coverage table indicates which number types support which communication channels in each market.

Number portability is supported in many countries, but availability varies. You can check the coverage list to confirm if number porting is available for the country and number type you need.

Local numbers: Ideal for making your numbers fit in with the area and for establishing community trust, local numbers use area codes to show that the call or message is coming from a person or business nearby.

National numbers: A fixed number that isn’t tied to any specific area. It’s great for country-wide reach and gives you a nationwide presence.

Mobile numbers: Enable two-way SMS and app workflows like OTPs or notifications. Because they’re not a landline, they can be used anywhere that has cellular service.

Toll-free numbers: Let customers contact you without taking on costs.

Short codes: High-throughput messaging for marketing, alerts, and authentication.

Alphanumeric sender IDs: Branded one-way messaging (where allowed).

RCS: Rich messaging for supported devices and markets.

Local telecom regulations, carrier restrictions, and numbering plans differ by region. Sinch maintains compliance with each market’s rules, so availability depends on what local regulators and carriers allow. Specific country-to-country regulations are available on the Sinch Build Dashboard.

You can request numbers through the Sinch platform or API. If coverage exists in your target market, you can activate numbers quickly; if restrictions apply, Sinch will guide you through documentation or approval processes when required.
