Signalling Threats; SS7 and Beyond – An in-depth analysis that unveils the real threats facing the mobile industry today

Symsoft AB, the operator division of CLX Communications AB (Publ) – XSTO:CLX, today launched a new whitepaper that explores the vulnerabilities in signalling networks, the consequences of attacks and what can be done longer term to mitigate these threats. Fredrik Söderlund, Symsoft Security Advisor and co-author of the paper explained, ‘It has been widely acknowledged that a number of vulnerabilities in signalling networks are being exploited on a global scale. Now is the time to understand the issues and put in place countermeasures to ensure the future of network safety is ensured.’ The consequences of attacks are not only for MNOs to consider, subscribers are being targeted using these signalling weaknesses and in some cases defrauded of thousands of euros. With increased public knowledge of telecom network vulnerabilities, the industry must work to mitigate the risks to prevent subscriber churn and mistrust from both customers and government regulators alike. The paper goes on to discuss the security aspects of telecom protocols including attacks using malformed packets in addition to the widely discussed signalling based attacks. Anna Trossing, Product Manager at Symsoft and co-author of the paper continued ‘We hope the paper will aid MNOs and those working in network security to better identify vulnerabilities and begin the process of deploying solutions to protect their networks today and in the future.’ Download today.
