RCS is a person-to-person messaging protocol designed to deliver better experiences across Apple and Android devices. Think of it as a richer, more engaging alternative to regular texting, with high-resolution images, videos, reactions, and typing indicators.
RCS for Business puts this technology to work for business-consumer communications offering an app-like experience but in a user’s native mobile inbox, just like SMS and MMS.
Depending on your customers’ needs and preferences, both RCS and SMS might suit your business. Many businesses combine RCS and SMS as part of their broader messaging strategy to cover all their bases.
While SMS is a reliable option for basic text messages up to 160 characters, RCS chat offers enhanced features and the ability to send longer messages to your audience with Android devices.
That could be why so many businesses that want to embrace a rich messaging future start with an easy solution: Auto-upgrading existing SMS messages to RCS where it’s possible and maintaining SMS where needed. Embracing this business messaging strategy at your business ensures that you’re catering to the widest audience possible.
RCS has full operator coverage in several countries today, while other countries offer partial support or support via Google. Coverage for RCS is growing.
RCS is mainly available on Android today, but that’s changing fast. In September 2024, Apple released iOS 18 including support for RCS in certain markets. This means improved messaging experiences between Android and Apple devices. RCS for Business support also became available in later iOS releases. This is currently limited to certain markets and is carrier dependent.
We expect roll-out to additional countries/networks to come during 2025.
Despite the market and operator limitations today, this is a huge step toward ubiquitous reach and the opportunity for businesses to send verified, branded messages to Android and iPhone devices.
