What is SIP?

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a protocol for setting up and terminating multimedia communications. Protocols are the “rules” that devices or computers use to exchange data. 

These devices, better known as endpoints, can communicate as long as they agree to use SIP. Even endpoints from different vendors can work together using this protocol, making it the industry standard for many businesses. 

SIP is currently under the control and management of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which developed and standardized the protocol. 

What are the benefits of SIP? 

The appeal of SIP lies in its flexibility. It not only involves the messages traveling between endpoints in a network but also the exact rules on how to set up sessions. SIP powers various types of communication, including phone calls, VoIP, instant messaging, video conferencing, email, and media sharing.

  • Cybersecurity: Some businesses considering Internet communication are concerned about security. Reputable SIP phone vendors provide encryption, which protects your data as it travels through the network.
